Thanks, but it will only work properly for the person who started it (garymccaffrey). I tried it (somewhat regrettably) and got ten more followers but ended up autofollowing a bunch of irritating people who I then had to un-follow. I imagine the number of followers that you gained stopped at around 20 or so? I only got ten myself. Certainly not the thousands promised!

Don't know about tools like this, it's just the old pyrimid scheme/chain letter concept.
Yes getting more followers is good, but I don't just want followers I want people who are interested in what I'm saying and tweeting about.
However, that's just me. I'm sure there are those out there that measure their worth by how many followers they have versus the quality of the followers. I just happen to not be one of them

I have seen lots of people use these types of apps to gain followers. More followers is not always the answer. Personal contact seems to work best for me and smaller follower amounts with interaction has gotten me real attention, rather than thousands who may read a tweet and never respond.

Does anyone actually know what the purpose of Twitter is? Is there one, or is it just an online popularity contest??

To concisely tie many ideas together: I'm agreeing with Robert S as well. I've found success in working to foster fledgling online relationships, build them into real world relationships, and those real world relationships turn into contracts and referrals and the chance to give something back.
That's a little difficult to do when you're trying to keep an eye on 10K people's tweets.
Start local, start focused, and be a helpful part of the community. Join a tweet-up. You will find success.
